At the heart of Devon is one of the UK's most fascinating National Parks - Dartmoor. Mostly rugged moorland, it's a haven for walkers and those on the trail of ancient Megaliths and Stone Circles. Around the outskirts of the Dartmoor National Park runs the Dartmoor Way, passing through historic towns such as Okehampton, Tavistock and Ashburton, many of which grew as stannary towns serving the Dartmoor Tin Industry. Dartmoor National Park is possibly one of the most popular national parks in the UK, stretching across 368 square miles (954 sq km). Dartmoor Tors are extremely dramatic such as Hound Tor or Brent Tor with a church on the top in West Dartmoor. Devon fishing fans won't be disappointed in Tavistock, which has a number of great fishing venues. Explore the history of the English Civil War in Great Torrington, and golf fans head for Holsworthy and Yelverton Golf Courses. For walkers hook into the Two Moors Way weaving up to Exmoor, or the Tarka Trail. Okehampton makes a great starting point for both of these trails.
On the North Devon Coast you will find some of the most beautiful and dramatic stretches of coastline in the UK. A surfers paradise at Woolacombe, Bude, Croyde and Westward Ho! For coastal walking along a dramatic cliff and sand dune coastline go via the South West Coast Path and visit Ilfracombe with it's famous tunnel beaches. There is a selection of charming coastal villages like Clovelly, Lynmouth and Lynton, and Combe Martin and further inland Bideford. East Devon has a character all its own. For Devon cities Exeter reigns supreme, with it's central gothic cathedral, superb shopping, a cafe/student culture and an excellent contemporary art, cinema and arts centre scene. Combine this with it's chic quay, the Exeter Ship Canal, woollen trade and Roman and Medieval history and you have the perfect mix for a Devon city of culture. The East Devon coast with the Jurassic Coastline, taking in Budleigh Salterton, Sidmouth and up into Dorset through Lyme Regis is of international importance, and marked by it's red sandstone cliffs.
